Unidos Con Francisco Demand: Drop the Charges, Release Him Immediately

Faith, labor, and community leaders are planning to rally and hold a rally to express their outrage at the arrest of Francisco Aguirre earlier today, demanding that the new and frivolous immigration-related charge against him be dropped and he be released immediately.

This morning, the beloved community leader who took to sanctuary at Augustana Lutheran Church nearly two months ago after agents sought him out, was arrested on a warrant for “illegal reentry” issued through collaboration between the US District Attorney’s Office and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“Since he took sanctuary, Francisco has been surrounded by love and an outpouring of support from the Mayor to the day laborers whose rights he’s defended,” explains Romeo Sosa, executive director of VOZ.  “Instead of honoring his place in our community, ICE looked for a backdoor way to put him in detention and found it with the US district attorney. Of all the things to pursue in the state of Oregon, a labor leader shouldn’t be one of them.”
