There are times when what may have been unimaginable to some starts to become reality.
When institutions that seemed immoveable are suddenly called into question.
This is one of those moments.
More and more people are calling out the cruel and inhumane practice of immigrant detention and demanding that it stop. Thousands languish behind bars every day to fill a quota and bring in money to private companies and local jails.
People who came looking for a better life, often escaping violence and poverty in their home countries, shouldn’t be subjected to jail cells and barbed wire. A pending court date isn’t justification to be kept in a cage.
The New York Times recently called for an end to detention and a growing number of politicians are adopting the opinion.
We should not be in the business of building barbed wire detention camps. Detentions are cruel, costly & against our values-esp for families
