Artist: El Colectivo Altepee
Traditional jarana music has often been a vehicle to communicate peoples’ daily
struggles and celebrations. Here young jaraneros from Colectivo Altepee send
this song in support of men and women whose families have been divided by
deportations, as well as for the hundreds of deportees who arrive every day in
Mexico, without work nor social support. We condemn these actions of the US
government, which continue to add fuel to the fire of an already war-torn nation.
Musicians and immigrants in the US and Mexico demand an end to deportations, and
dignity for our communities.
Song: Alto a las deportaciones
About the Band:
“We’re a group of youth from southern Veracruz – and a few from other places –
who see the traditional string music as a tool for social integration in a common
environment: the huapango, the traditional celebration of our communities. We
foment community organization and participation.” El Colectivo Altepee make their
own instruments, repair instruments, teach string music, contribute to traditional
community celebrations, build community with elders and youth in several
communities throughout southern Veracruz, and they support several struggles for
liberation and self determination in Veracruz and throughout Mexico. Their work
sets the bar a lot higher for anybody that is trying to build anything from the bottom
up.
Lyrics:
vengo desde el río granizo
ahora acabo de llegar
y traigo de compromiso
venirlos a saludar
señores con su permiso
voy a empezar a cantar
soy un jaranero andante
viví en estados unidos
por todos es bien sabido
que esta es nación de inmigrantes
desde los tiempos de antes
gente de tantas naciones
trabajamos como peones
beneficiando a los ricos
por eso hoy les exijo
¡alto a las deportaciones!
la rabia esta contenida
entre la sangre y el pecho
los corruptos homicidas
el corazón le han deshecho
a mi gente tan querida
malditas deportaciones
mi familia han divido
mi hijo en estados unidos
solo sin supervisiones
que ridículas acciones
de un gobierno incompetente
por complacer a una gente
que es racista e infeliz
se creen dueños del país
¡pero es nuestro el continente!
que mi voz suba hasta el cerro
y baje por los barrancos
hasta que los jornaleros
se apoderen de los campos
es muy larga nuestra historia
yo era solo un infante
cuando cruzamos errantes
esa línea divisoria
hoy, reforma migratoria
es un lema tan fugaz
yo no daré paso atrás
hasta poderlo lograr
pero para comenzar
¡ni una deportación más!
