#Not1More Deportation

Success in Jose Maria’s Case in Connecticut

In July Jose Maria islas was freed from immigration detention, on the same day as governor Malloy celebrated the passage of the TRUST Act to limit deportations in Connecticut.

Although he is still facing deportation pending a court decision, Jose Maria would not be with his family today, if it had not been for the support from the community.

Jose Maria was placed in detention proceedings after being accused of an attempted robbery, charges which were dismissed by the judge. He was turned over to immigration under the Secure Communities program, which pointed to Jose Maria’s past immigration history — 3 stops at the border when he fist came to the country. The passage of the TRUST Act will limit such collaboration in the future.

Jose Maria’s sister, Juana, said, “I hope that now that we have the TRUST Act, families will not suffer the way my family is suffering. Today he is being released because the community said no more. “We will continue to fight his deportation. The trust act is a step forward and we have to keep fighting until all the prisoners are free.”
